My Favorite Graphic Novels

Comics are a diverse and unique story-telling medium, a perfect cross between television and books. People often discount graphic novels and comics as not true literature, or think them inherently boring or poorly created. However, as an avid reader of all written art forms, i can easily discount this.  Sure- their may be those of lesser quality, but just like any other creative media- movies, novels, or video games, they shouldn't be defined by their poorest products. In my experience, many teen graphic novels are of much higher quality than their novel counterparts, telling deep and beautiful stories that conquer difficult subjects with grace, such as racial diversity, family, immigration, disabilities, and other struggles of growing up.

A lot more also goes into the creation of a comic or graphic novel than most people realize. Comic artists have to think about, and accurately plan each and every box, taking the time to consider the most engaging views to benefit there story. This may include, but is not limited to: perspective, lighting, color, backgrounds, diversity in characters’ appearances, facial expression, motion, and dialog. Unlike in the creation of a TV series or movie, where each of these design aspects are conquered by a team of talented people, a comic artists must be well-verses in all of them.

Below is a list of some of my favorite graphic novels, with their author, genre and/or main subject, and recommended reading age. I hope you enjoy them as much as i have. :)

  3. Ooh, yes, The Bone Chronicles were my life as a kid, and they still are, and even though the series took a pretty dark turn to the point that my school banned the last volume, it was still extremely good. I also have Smile and Sisters (because braces stories are the best). Do you like the Amulet series, or this one graphic novel which I think is called "Ghostville"? They're really good.

  4. I love graphic novels! Although they're considered not 'true literature', they're still books that tell a story but instead of using you're imagination you see the story with your own eyes :)
As an anime fanatic, I read more manga but this list looks promising so I may check some of these out :D
